Most “messy beard” complaints are really about edges. A careful neckline and cheek line make even short stubble look deliberate.
Find the neckline
A common approach is to imagine a U-curve above the Adam’s apple, not a hard horizontal slash under the jaw. Trim below that curve shorter or clean. Go slow — you can always remove more.
Cheek line
Follow your natural growth first. Over-high cheek lines look artificial on many faces. Use a detail head for the last pass.
Symmetry check
Step back from the mirror or take a quick phone photo in even light. Fix only obvious imbalance; micro-adjustments every day can make lines uneven.
Detail heads exist for a reason — finish edges after the bulk length is set, not before.
